Tip #2: Elite XL No Video Troubleshooting — How to Remove the Housing and Check the Controller Connection

If your Elite XL LED sign has no video and you have already tried the software troubleshooting steps with no success, the next step is to check the physical connection between the controller and the video card inside the sign.

This guide shows how to safely remove the side housing on the Elite XL and inspect the internal video connection.

This should be used when:

  • The sign has power, but no image is showing.
  • Software settings have already been checked.
  • The sign is still blank after restarting or re-sending content.
  • The controller appears to be working, but the display is not receiving video.

Important Safety Notice:
Turn off power to the sign before opening the housing or touching any internal components. Do not work inside the sign while power is connected. If you are not comfortable working around electrical components, contact LED Sign City or a qualified technician.

Tools Needed

  • T10H screwdriver — Tamper-Resistant Torx T10
  • Small container to hold screws
  • Good lighting
  • Phone or camera to take reference photos before disconnecting anything

Step 1: Locate the Housing Screws

![There are three screws on the bottom corner of each side of the sign.]

On the Elite XL, the side housing is secured by screws located near the bottom corner of each side of the sign.

There are three screws on each side, for a total of six screws that need to be removed before the housing can come off.

Step 2: Remove the Screws on Both Sides

![Close-up of the screw location. Remove the screws on both sides.]

Using a T10H Tamper-Resistant Torx T10 screwdriver, remove the three screws from one side of the housing.

Then remove the three screws from the opposite side.

Place the screws in a safe container so they do not get lost. You will need them when reinstalling the housing.

Step 3: Confirm All Six Screws Are Removed

![Another close-up showing the screws on the housing.]

Before trying to remove the housing, confirm that all six screws have been removed.

Do not force the housing. If it does not move, recheck both bottom corners to make sure no screws were missed.

Step 4: Slide the Housing Up and Remove It

![Remove the housing by sliding it up. Close-up image showing the housing removed.]

Once all six screws are removed, carefully slide the side housing upward.

The housing should lift off and expose the side of the LED sign.

Move slowly and avoid pulling aggressively. Be careful not to damage nearby wires, brackets, or internal components.

Step 5: Remove the Top Brackets Carefully

![Unscrew the brackets on the top. Be careful because the brackets hold the two sections together.]

After the housing is removed, you may need to remove the top brackets to access the internal controller and video card area.

Be careful during this step. These brackets help hold the sign sections together, so the sign should be supported while the brackets are removed.

Do not allow the sign sections to shift, separate, or twist while working.

Step 6: Identify the Controller and Video Card

![The controller is the black box and the video card is the green circuit board.]

Inside the sign, locate the two main components:

The controller is the black box.

The video card is the green circuit board.

The controller sends the video signal to the video card. The video card then distributes the signal to the LED modules. If the cable between these two parts is loose or disconnected, the sign may have power but still show no image.

Check this area for:

  • Loose cables
  • Unplugged connectors
  • Damaged wires
  • Connectors that shifted during shipping or installation
  • Power connectors that are not fully seated on the video card

Step 7: Verify the LED OUT Cable Connection

![Verify that the LED OUT port on the controller is properly plugged into the Ethernet port on the video card.]

The main connection to check is the cable running from the LED OUT port on the controller to the Ethernet-style port on the video card.

Make sure the cable is fully plugged in on both ends:

  1. Confirm the cable is securely connected to the LED OUT port on the controller.
  2. Confirm the other end is securely connected to the Ethernet-style port on the video card.
  3. Push each connector in firmly to make sure it is fully seated.

A loose LED OUT cable can cause:

  • No video
  • Blank screen
  • Partial image
  • Intermittent display
  • Controller appears online, but the sign does not show content
  • Display not responding after software troubleshooting

Step 8: Check the Video Card Power Connections

While the housing is open, also verify that the power connectors going into the video card are secure.

If the video card does not have a proper power connection, it may not receive or distribute the signal correctly.

Check that:

  • The power wires are connected.
  • The connectors are fully seated.
  • No wires are loose, pinched, or damaged.
  • Nothing was pulled loose while removing the housing.

Step 9: Reassemble the Elite XL Housing

Once the connections have been checked:

  1. Take a clear photo of the controller, video card, and cable connections.
  2. Reinstall the top brackets if they were removed.
  3. Carefully slide the side housing back into place.
  4. Reinstall all six housing screws using the T10H screwdriver.
  5. Make sure the housing is secure before restoring power.

Step 10: Restore Power and Test the Sign

After the housing is fully reinstalled, restore power to the sign and test the display.

If the cable was loose, the sign may begin showing video again once the connection is secure.

If the sign still has no video, the next step is to contact LED Sign City support with photos of the internal connections.

When Contacting Support

To help us troubleshoot faster, please send photos of:

  • The controller
  • The video card
  • The LED OUT cable connection
  • The power connectors on the video card
  • The front of the display while powered on

This allows our support team to confirm whether the issue is related to a loose connection, video card, controller, or another internal component.

Summary

If the Elite XL sign has no video and software troubleshooting did not resolve the issue, the next step is to remove the housing and check the internal video connection.

The most important item to verify is that the LED OUT port on the controller is securely connected to the video card. A loose cable at this connection can prevent the sign from displaying video even when the sign has power.
