🛣️ Mississippi Digital Sign Regulations: What You Need to Know for Off-Premise LED Signs

If you’re considering installing an off-premise digital billboard or LED sign in Mississippi, it’s important to understand the state’s regulations. The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has clear guidelines that apply to digital signage placed along state-controlled routes.

This guide breaks down the essential requirements for digital signs—so you can plan your project confidently and stay in compliance.

📍 Where These Rules Apply

These rules apply statewide but specifically impact signs that are:

  • Located within 660 feet of the right-of-way along state-controlled routes (urban areas)

  • Located beyond 660 feet in rural areas if the sign is still visible from the highway

  • Off-premise only – these rules do not apply to on-premise business signage

✅ Key Requirements for Digital Signs in Mississippi

1. Spacing Between Signs

  • Minimum of 1,000 feet between digital signs on the same side of the highway

  • Minimum of 500 feet from on-ramps, off-ramps, and at-grade intersections

2. Display Timing

  • Each message must remain static for at least 8 seconds

  • Transitions between messages must occur in 2 seconds or less

  • No flashing, scrolling, or animated content allowed

3. Brightness Limits

  • Must not exceed 0.3 foot-candles above ambient light levels

  • Measurements must be taken from a distance based on the size of the sign

  • Brightness must automatically adjust to day/night lighting conditions

4. Malfunctions

  • If the sign malfunctions, it must either default to a static image or shut off entirely until resolved

5. Permits Are Required

  • A permit from MDOT is required before installation

  • You’ll need to submit detailed plans including:

    • Exact location

    • Size and specs of the display

    • Power and connectivity plans

    • Proof of local compliance
